Since the Grand Wagoneer was announced in 2014 at FCA Investor Day nearly one year ago information has been nascent, nearly scant. Details began to flow a little more freely during 2015's first quarter Auto Show Circus.
In New York Jeep CEO Mike Manley ASSURED that the Grand Wagoneer is "100 percent on track to debut in 2018"
. Interestingly the Grand Wagoneer is a wish of FCA Sergio Marchionne to have a Range Rover rival in their portfolio.
Rewinding back to Geneva Manly did hint that their target price is still up in the air, but he did stress that Jeep has shown an ability to operate in the $45,000 plus segment of the market. Jeeps prime motivation has been watching transaction prices on the Grand Cherokee steadily rise over the last few years.
Its been rumoured that the GW could and should raid the Maserati Levante's parts bin. Expect the platform to be Grand Cherokee derived but the motivation could possibly come from Maserati's 3.8L twin turbo V8 and likely use the same Motori 3.0L V6 diesel in the Ghibli, Grand Cherokee and RAM Ecodiesel currently.
The fact is this, Jeep has found a fair amount of high end consumers are actually cross shopping Jeep and Land Rover
when looking for an off-roader, they want a weapon to allow them to offer the pricey, high margin stuff. Something cash strapped FCA desperately needs. Add to the fact that JLR will be debuting a high performance off road brand, SVX
, shortly and this should make for an interesting rivalry in the coming years...
